Lynn University Graduation Photo Session in Boca Raton
Graduation photographs become much more personal when they show more than your cap and gown. They should also reflect the places, activities and experiences that shaped your time at university.
That was the idea behind Cameron’s graduation photo session at Lynn University. As a student-athlete, the athletics field was an important part of his university experience, so it made far more sense to photograph him there than to follow a generic route around the campus.
We combined traditional cap-and-gown portraits with his student-athlete stole, Lynn sportswear, running shoes and a hurdle. We finished with a champagne celebration because, after all that work, a quiet handshake was never going to be enough.
A Lynn University graduation session with a personal connection
When I plan graduation pictures, I always want to know what made the university experience meaningful to the graduate.
For Cameron, that connection was athletics. The track and field area gave us more than an attractive background—it helped tell his story. The Lynn Fighting Knights branding immediately established where he graduated, while his equipment and student-athlete stole showed an important part of what he accomplished during his time at the university.
That is what makes a graduation session feel personal. You do not need a suitcase full of props or fifteen different locations. One place that genuinely matters to you can say far more than a tour of every popular campus landmark.
Photographing Cameron on the Lynn athletics field
We created several different looks without needing to leave the athletics area.
We started with cleaner portraits of Cameron wearing his suit. A hurdle, running shoe and Lynn athletics top helped connect these photographs with his identity as a student-athlete without making them feel like standard sports pictures.
We then added his graduation gown, cap and white stole for the more traditional portraits. I photographed some images tightly so the attention stayed on Cameron and his graduation details, while wider compositions included the field and Lynn Fighting Knights sign.
Using both approaches gave him a varied collection:
Professional portraits in his suit.
Cap-and-gown graduation pictures.
Wider photographs showing the Lynn campus setting.
Details connected with his athletics experience.
Relaxed celebratory images.
Photographs suitable for sharing with family and on social media.
Everything still looked like part of one session because the photographs shared the same location and story.
Working with the bright South Florida light
Cameron’s session took place in strong, directional Florida sunlight. That gave us vivid blue skies, crisp Lynn University colors and long shadows across the field.
Open areas such as an athletics field do not provide the same shade as a building or covered walkway, so positioning becomes especially important. I adjusted Cameron’s position in relation to the light and used the open space to create strong, uncluttered compositions.
This is also why I do not recommend choosing your session time based only on convenience. Earlier in the morning or later in the afternoon will generally give us softer conditions than the middle of the day. If the athletics field or another open campus area is important to you, we can consider the direction of the light when planning the route.
Making the session feel like you
Your graduation regalia is important, but it does not have to be the only thing you wear or bring.
Cameron’s suit gave us a more polished set of portraits before we introduced his cap and gown. His student-athlete stole, Lynn top, running shoe and hurdle then made the session unmistakably his.
Think about what tells your own Lynn University story. It might be:
A stole, honor cord or decorated graduation cap.
Clothing or equipment connected with your sport.
Something related to your degree or student organization.
A location where you spent a significant part of university life.
A close friend, teammate or family member who supported you.
One smart outfit for portraits without your gown.
You do not need to bring everything you own. Two or three meaningful details normally work better than a collection of random graduation props.
Celebrating the moment
Once we had created the formal portraits, we finished Cameron’s session with something much more energetic: a champagne spray on the field.
The Lynn Fighting Knights sign in the background made the location immediately recognizable, while the movement of the spray gave us a natural reaction rather than a carefully held pose. It created a fun ending to the session and balanced the more composed photographs we had taken earlier.
If you want to include a celebratory idea, tell me before the session so we can plan where and when to photograph it. You should also confirm Lynn University’s current campus rules before bringing champagne, confetti or anything that could leave a mess.
What this Lynn University session taught us
Cameron’s photographs are a good example of why the most meaningful location is not always the most obvious campus landmark.
The athletics field worked because it was relevant to his university experience. It also provided several recognizable elements—the field itself, athletics equipment, Lynn colors and the Fighting Knights branding—within one area.
Working around one meaningful location allowed us to create different photographs without spending most of the session walking from one end of campus to the other. Variety came from changing the outfit, camera angle, composition and activity rather than constantly changing the background.
For your session, I would rather photograph two or three places that mean something to you than rush through a long checklist of locations just because everybody else uses them.
When should you take your Lynn graduation pictures?
You do not have to arrange your private graduation session on commencement day. In many cases, choosing another date makes the experience much easier.
Graduation day can be busy, with family plans, travel, parking and the ceremony itself all competing for your time. A separate session gives us more freedom to choose suitable light, move around without rushing and include an outfit change.
Your main options are:
Before commencement
This is usually the best choice if you want time to plan the photographs and use several personal items. Arrange the session after receiving your cap, gown, cords and stole.
During commencement week
The excitement is at its highest, but popular areas may be busier. An early-morning session can help us avoid some of the crowds and heat.
After graduation
This can be a relaxed option if your regalia is still available. There is less pressure, although you should check when rented items need to be returned.

What to bring to your Lynn University graduation session
Before leaving for campus, check that you have:
Your cap, gown and tassel.
Any cords, stoles or academic honors.
Your diploma cover, if available.
A smart outfit to wear underneath the gown.
Comfortable shoes for walking between locations.
Water, especially during warmer weather.
A small towel or touch-up kit.
Any meaningful sports, academic or personal item we have discussed.
Keep smaller items together in one bag and, if possible, bring somebody who can hold it while we photograph. That saves us from repeatedly trying to hide bags, phones and water bottles behind the nearest tree.
